It was a dull derby but Liverpool were the better team. The better team by a long way too. Everton didn’t have an attack of significance in the second half. They barely had that in the first either.
But the visitors appeared to be the only team intent on making something happen. For all the intensity on show, there was little quality. Plenty of huffing and puffing but nobody was able to blow the house down.
That was until four minutes into stoppage time. Substitute Daniel Sturridge was the difference-maker for his club, coming off the bench to hit a shot off the post. From the rebound, Sadio Mane raced in to seal all three points for Liverpool. It was a sucker punch in one way but there’s no doubting that they deserved it.
