Newcastle made it six wins from six with a serious shellacking of Preston on Tuesday evening in the EFL Cup.
Isaac Hayden hit the post early on but it didn’t take long for Newcastle to take the lead.
Aleksandr Mitrovic opened the scoring on 19 minutes, heading home from a Matt Ritchie free-kick.
Preston’s hopes of launching a comeback were severely set back when Alan Browne received a straight red card for a poor challenge on Jack Colback.
It was 2-0 at half-time thanks to a fine strike by Mo Diame.
In the second half, Newcastle ran riot. Matt Ritchie scored a penalty. Mitrovic beat three defenders and the goalkeeper for his second.
Diame scored his second on 87 with another strike from outside the box. And, Ayoze Perez completed the rout with a curled finish.
