Manchester United are closing in on the transfer of Malmo wonderkid Lucas Gomes, the club’s sporting director Mikael Brandrup has all but confirmed in an interview.
The 14-year-old looks a huge talent coming through in Swedish football right now, and has reportedly impressed the Red Devils whilst on trial recently.
This is according to the Metro, who claim Malmo have been desperate to keep hold of Gomes, but now expect to lose him to United in the near future.
‘Lucas was in Manchester for week 44 and unfortunately I do not think we’ll keep him,’ Brandrup told Skanesport.
‘He moved here from Karlskrona in the autumn of 2016 to go to our sports school and, of course, he might have to wait until he left the school before moving back.
‘But I understand he’s impressed with United.’
While Jose Mourinho may not have the best record of promoting youth players, United themselves have a proud history involving their academy stars.
Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are the latest to make the grade after coming through as homegrown talents, while Paul Pogba also spent time with the Reds at youth level before leaving for Juventus and then re-joining last summer.
Gomes could be the next big thing to get his breakthrough with United, though fans surely won’t be seeing much of him for a long time yet.
For now, however, this looks like being a smart piece of work by the club in the transfer market if the deal does go through.
