United are in a strong position.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Espanyol left-back Aaron Martin, who has a £35million release clause in his contract.

The Red Devils are joined by Manchester City in tracking the highly-rated 20-year-old, whom Espanyol are apparently resigned to losing in one of the next two transfer windows, according to ESPN.

Martin has made eight La Liga appearances so far this season, and looks an impressive talent who could now be heading to England in the near future.

United could certainly do with a better long-term option at left-back at the moment, with Luke Shaw struggling to live up to his full potential at Old Trafford and various other names filling in in that area.

Still, with the likes of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind not exactly naturals in the role, it is little surprise to see Jose Mourinho looking at alternatives.

The Sun recently claimed United were set to make a big-money bid for Tottenham’s Danny Rose in that area, but Martin would be a great deal cheaper and is also seven years younger.

Although the young Spaniard has five more years left on his contract, Espanyol are not optimistic they can keep hold of him and would accept him leaving for his release clause fee of £35m.

While this seems steep for a relatively unproven player, United have not been shy of big spending in recent years, and forked out a not dissimilar price for Victor Lindelof in the summer.

Shaw, meanwhile, has also been linked by the Daily Record with a move to Tottenham as part of a deal for Rose.

While it remains to be seen if such a deal could be possible if United end up signing Martin over Rose, it seems pretty clear that the former Southampton defender will be shown the door by Mourinho before too long.
