Explained: Why Chelsea star may be closer than ever to Real Madrid transfer after Maurizio Sarri appointment | CaughtOffside

Chelsea’s hopes of keeping goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois away from a transfer to Real Madrid this summer do not look great.

But then again, it needn’t be too big a worry for Blues fans, as it’s been suggested that new manager Maurizio Sarri may not fancy him due to his preferred playing style of playing out from the back.

HLN report that Courtois is in advanced talks over a move to Real Madrid, while Gianluca Di Marzio reports Sarri would like Roma shot-stopper Alisson to replace him.

While Courtois is undoubtedly one of the best ‘keepers in the world, Bleacher Report journalist Sam Tighe believes it could make sense for CFC to cash in on him now after the change of manager – which may be why the HLN report above suggests this sale is underway.

The Belgium international only has a year to run on his current contract anyway, and Tighe explains that he doesn’t seem an ideal fit under Sarri, who played a very particular type of football at Napoli, to great success.

Tighe quotes Sarri as previously waxing lyrical about the performances of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson last season.

It is true that the Brazilian was a superb fit for Pep Guardiola’s side with his passing and playmaking from deep, which could be a setup that Chelsea would do well to replicate as they look to get back to their best.

Thibaut Courtois leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid might not be such a bad thing

Many fans will no doubt be concerned to see a big name like Courtois leaving, but if someone like Alisson or another ‘keeper more to Sarri’s liking could come in, it could end up being good business by the club for a player who might just leave on a free transfer next summer anyway.
