After a seriously chastening week for Newcastle, which saw them lose twice in the Championship and get dumped out the Capital One Cup by Hull, the Toon returned to winning ways at home on Saturday.
Dwight Gayle was the hero once again for Newcastle, scoring three in the match – the former Crystal Palace striker now has 16 goals in 16 Championship matches this season.
Newcastle’s win also means they are a point clear of Brighton in second and six points clear of third placed Reading.
Rafa Benitez’s side took the lead on 18 minutes. Mohamed Diame crossed from the right for Gayle to head home.
Six minutes later, Gayle made it 2-0, after being left alone at the back post.
Two minutes after the break, Yoann Gouffran secured the win, Gayle grabbed the assist.
With thirteen minutes remaining, Gayle scored the fourth, Shelvey with the assist this time.
