Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the ballon d’Or winner after the Real Madrid star beat Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to the title tonight Paris.
Ronaldo clinched his fifth ever ballon d’Or title putting him on level with Messi. The Portuguese star has had another superb year after also clinching his fourth ever Champions League title.
It was the star’s third Champions League title with Real Madrid, having also won the title with Manchester United in 2008 during a famous final against Chelsea.
The star not only pipped Messi to tonight’s ballon d’Or but he also beat the Barca man to this year’s La Liga title.
It has been a tough year for Messi with Barca failing to compete domestically and also crashing out in the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League against Juventus.
With the stars now both level on five ballon d’Or titles each it begs the question as to whether 2018 will be the ultimate year where the two go head-to-head for one last time to determine who is the greatest of all time.
Both are now over the age of 30 and are likely to only have a very limited few seasons left performing at the top of their performance levels. Next year’s World Cup could be the stage that see’s the great debate decided with both Portugal and Argentina qualifying.
It has been a superb week for Ronaldo as mentioned previously with the star becoming the first ever player to score in every single Champions League group game in an single campaign.
We salute you, king Ronnie!
